Just Say No to Weed Fabric
It introduces more plastic (and degraded microplastics) into the environment.
Within a year or two, it shows through and is unsightly.
It doesn’t actually stop weeds, which grow between the weed fabric and the edges.
Over time, new soil forms on top of it and weeds grow in that soil.
It prevents native plants from propagating themselves and filling in your project.
“Lasagna” is the answer.
Instead of weed fabric, we use the lasagna technique: a layer of thick paper and mulch. In the first year or so, the paper will help prevent germinating weeds from reaching the surface. The paper biodegrades as your “weed debt” is paid down. The mulch also inhibits weed growth. And a little hand weeding, which our maintenance agreement covers, will get you to the point where in a year or so, you’ll basically have no weeds.
